Mission:
Celebrating contemporary art in Northern New Mexico, sharing its artists, histories, and ideas with communities near and far.

“My work is my teacher.” — Larry Bell

Founded in Taos in 2025, Art as Teacher brings together artists and arts advocates connected by a belief in art as a lifelong process of inquiry, discovery, and learning. Its founding board includes Larry Bell, Ron Cooper, Sandra Lerner, Gus Foster, Alexandra Benjamin, Dora and Carl Dillistone, Michael Straus, and Jane McFadden. The artists’ lives, creative practices, and accumulated knowledge provide the inspiration from which the Foundation’s broader public mission has emerged.

Initiated and inspired by Janet Webb, Art as Teacher honors her vision and deep commitment to the arts in Taos. Working with consultant and incoming Executive Director J. Matthew Thomas, the board is now shaping the Foundation’s programs, partnerships, and future direction.

Currently the foundation is establishing infrastructure, raising and solidifying funds, and building its board. In 2027, we will be hosting our first events and embarking on a strategic planning process. To learn more, get involved, or make a contribution, please email us at admin@artasteacher.org.
